Indoor Courses and Lectures

How to Teach: “There is no such thing as a poor student, only a poor instructor.” Teaching is a learned art form. Come and learn how to help people comprehend and retain what you are trying to teach. This course is designed for those who volunteer or instruct part time and are not professional teachers. Improve your delivery and results. Time: 2 hours. Requirements: Classroom and white board.

Leadership:“Learning is leadership.” Take the initiative—learn more about what it takes to be an effective leader. Through discussion, role-playing, initiatives, and a variety of activities we’ll explore group dynamics, roles and responsibilities of leaders, and risk management. Time: 2 to 8 hours depending upon the needs of the group. Requirements: Classroom and white board. For a full-day course, access to an outdoor area (one-third the size of a football field), is desired.

Trip Leading: Bob has gained valuable insight after having lead trips for over twenty years in such places as the Grand Canyon, Canada ’s Quetico Park, Honduras, Mexico, and Chile. In this class, he’ll share his thoughts on how to run trips that are safe, fun, and memorable, whether it’s a one-day excursion or a multi-day adventure. Time: 2 to 8 hours, depending upon the needs of the group. Requirements: Classroom and white board. For a full-day course, access to a small outdoor area is desired.

Basic Canoe Design: How do you choose a canoe? This basic course covers canoe design for flat and whitewater. Whether you’re browsing through a catalog or looking in a canoe store, you’ll have a good understanding of the various canoe designs and how each performs. This course is a must before you buy! (Note: This is a basic course; we will not be figuring drag ratios or equations). Time:1½ hours. Requirements: Classroom with a variety of canoes (different types of shapes).

Canoe Forward Stroke: Learn the correct mechanics and placement of your paddle for that ever-elusive forward stroke. Since this is the stroke that we use most of the time, it is worth learning how to do it well. Excellent for those who are paddling flat or whitewater. Time: 1 hour. Requirements: Classroom with canoe (to be set on a table).

of Chile , and share in the excitement as canoeists run 28-foot waterfalls and technical rivers. Time: 1 hour. Requirements: Classroom with a TV, VCR, and slide screen.

Canoeing the Grand Canyon Video and Slide Show: Enjoy the Grand Canyon ’s beauty, magic, and power as you watch canoes run some of the biggest rapids in the United States . Time: 1 hour. Requirements: Classroom with a TV, VCR, and slide screen.
